Presidential Preference Primary (PPP) Information FAQs
Election Date: January 31, 2012
Bookclosing: January 3, 2012
Is everyone eligible to vote in the PPP?
By law, Florida is a closed primary state and as such, it will be a partisan election for registered Republicans only. There are no democratic candidates, minor party candidates or amendments on the ballot for this election. ***
What if I have never voted in Florida but I am a Republican and want to vote in the PPP?
In order to be eligible to vote in January, all new registrants to the state of Florida must make application by the bookclosing date, January 3, 2012. Applications are available from this website. Applications should be printed, signed and mailed to PO Box 300, Dade City FL 33526. If printing an application is not an option, see a listing of Application Sites where pre-printed applications are available for pick-up.
If I am not a registered Republican and I want to vote in the PPP may I change my party?
Yes, as long as your request is in the Supervisor of Elections’ Office by January 3, 2012. You can request a party change on a voter registration application, or by a signed written notice that contains your date of birth or your voter registration number. Party changes should be mailed to PO Box 300, Dade City FL 33526.
I am a registered Republican in another county in Florida. May I vote in Pasco County in January?
Yes, as long as your registration is still in good standing your registration can be transferred to Pasco County by completing a voter registration application, by a signed written notice, or via telephone or electronic means, in which case you must provide your date of birth. Address changes may be made electronically from this website. There is no deadline to change a voter registration that is in good standing from another county; however, you are encouraged to submit the change prior to election day. Pursuant to Florida Statutes, if you wait until election day to change your address from another Florida county, you will be issued a provisional ballot.
Will early voting be available for the PPP?
Yes, early voting will be available from January 21, 2012 through January 28, 2012. A qualified voter may vote in person at various locations throughout Pasco County during the 8 day period prior to the PPP. The voter must present both picture and signature identification. A Florida driver license or identification card will meet those requirements.
*** Closed Primaries
Florida is a closed primary state. In a primary election, voters may only vote for candidates in their party of registration. By not selecting a party when you register to vote, your vote is limited in the primaries to only judges and issues. In the General Election, party affiliation is not an issue. You may vote for any candidate, regardless of party preference.
